Gateway College, Leicester

Lorne Stewart provided a fully integrated M&E solution which met the Colleges sustainability aspirations.
The scheme consisted of a naturally ventilated building with a fully automated window control system and includes such technologies as photovoltaic cells, biomass boiler, rain water harvesting and a wind turbine.
The project was handed over to the client four weeks ahead of target and 1,100 students now occupy the building. Lorne Stewart collaborated with the main Contractor, ISG Regions and carried out the full M&E design employing the services of Arup.

The Materials Innovation Factory is a state of the art facility to accelerate research and reduce new product development times relevant to a range of sectors including Unilevers, Home Care and Personal Care categories. The MIF provides equipment at the cutting-edge of materials chemistry research to facilitate the discovery of new materials which have the potential to save energy and natural resources, improve health or transform a variety of manufacturing processes. Chapman Square will undergo transformation into an active, welcoming hub for students, staff and the local community. The Salford Gateway building will provide an aesthetically pleasing welcome for staff and students alighting from Salford Crescent Railway Station and act as an attractive gateway to campus.
Facilities will include a theatre, recording and photography studios, café areas, performance and rehearsal spaces, computer suites and lecture theatres. The building will achieve BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating in line with the University’s sustainable agenda

Lorne Stewart were appointed to supply Mechanical and Electrical works to the new build development for Cardiff University to house the Brain Research Imagine Centre (CUBRIC), a 3-storey construction consisting of two wings connected by a central atrium. The ground floor is predominantly laboratory and testing areas including MRI scanning suites. The first floor is comprised of offices, meeting rooms and a staff breakout area. The second floor contains the plant areas and a seminar room.

Lorne Stewart were contracted to deliver the mechanical services to facilitate classrooms, IT suits, drama hall, library, kitchen and staff areas.
The initial scheme was awarded to Lorne Stewart by BAM under competitive tendering. The first phase was handed over on time and within budget. Additional works were then negotiated to include a heating replacement scheme within an existing building, as well as a further M&E refurbishment within the cookery and music block.

Swansea University Institute of Life Science 2 (ILS2 Project)

Swansea University have developed their Institute of Life Sciences sector to undertake world class and internationally recognized research. The new building will sit next to the ILS1 structure and will enhance the current Life Sciences division of the University. This 7-storey, 6000m2 building is to house the essential research infrastructure, a clinical research centre, an incubator grow-on space and will house a technology transfer and business support team. The building has achieved a BREEAM Excellence Standard. This project was carried out under the NEC 3 Option A sub-contract.

The new build has replaced the existing school building on the Elmfield Drive site in Marple which is over 40 years old and in poor condition. The works consisted of the design and construction of approximately 2,800m2 of new build further education accommodation that will accommodate specialist teaching space for the Colleges, music and media and heavy engineering provision of TV and recording studios, electrical and engineering training workshops, mock test bungalow, and teaching rooms.
This four-storey steel framed building has been cladded with a mixture of brickwork, copper cladding, Reglit glazing and curtain walling, all fixed to a lightweight SFS framing system and built to a BREEAM excellent standard.
The new facility will include a number of renewable energy sources that will provide for the building and also act as a teaching aid for the students including PV panels, solar collectors and air source heat pumps.

Synthetic Chemistry Lab (4th & 6th Floor), University of Manchester

The project involved the refurbishment of the 4th and 6th floors of the Chemistry building whilst other floors were occupied and in use. On the 4th floor all the existing partitions, ceilings and services were carefully removed and services checked before isolation.
The 6th floor was fully stripped back to the external walls, services; partitions and ceilings were all carefully dismantled and removed from site. Due to the complexity of the Services and the potential disruption to the other floors all services that were being removed were traced, surveyed and carefully isolated before their removal.

Ditton Park Academy is constructed of three linked buildings and a sports hall with 110 car parking spaces totalling over 8,200m². This new site allows the secondary school to have an intake of 1,100 students which includes 200 sixth formers and 150 staff.

The new Manor College building is a Future school, built as part of the 2nd phase of the North East Priority School Building Programme. The new building consists of three storeys and will provide facilities for 1250 11-16 aged pupils and 30 pupils with special education needs. The overall scheme will retain the existing swimming pool and refurbished sports hall, along with changing rooms that were recently modernised using charitable donations. Following the demolition of the remaining teaching buildings, new multi-use games area pitches, mini soccer pitches, full size football and rugby pitches and car parking will be created.

Lorne Stewart carried out two years of bid work to obtain a strong position on the Birmingham BSF framework with their partner Lend Lease and this Scheme was the first to be built. The Scheme was a 17,000m2 facility which incorporated Special Needs, Primary and Secondary Education in the centre of Birmingham
Where it was possible our sister company MDSL was utilised for off site manufacturing. MDSL supplied in excess of 25,500kg of modules, which ensured the installation period of the scheme was carried out smoothly, in a timely and safe manner with a high quality end product.

As part of the Birmingham BSF programme Lorne Stewart Midlands provided a full MEP installation at the Birmingham Ormiston Academy.
The BOA as it is known is a 9000m2 facility which specialises in performing arts and digital media. The project consisted of a full chilled beam installation and also operated systems such as biomass boiler, roof top package plantroom, rain water harvesting, syphonic rain water and underfloor heating systems.

The Southfield's Community College development consists of a new four-story block known as The Gateway block. This houses the new Energy Centre and main plant that serves not only this new block but also services the re-furbished Blocks A & B (which is over two stories), Block D (which is over 4 stories) and the new Aspire Extension which is over three stories.
Services interfaces to the existing community block C was also within our delivery but the plant and works within this space were retained.

Lorne Stewart successfully delivered the mechanical, electrical and plumbing services for Writhlington School as part of the Pathfinder Schools for the Future scheme for Bath and North East Somerset Council. The scheme was to provide a new green learning facility for the local community. The project was won on a back to back competitive tendering arrangement on a Design & Build basis with the emphasis on being a proactive integral part of the team.
